Gum Grafting

Gum grafting is a dental procedure used to treat gum recession, where the gums pull away from the teeth and expose the roots underneath. It involves replacing the lost tissue around the teeth to improve overall oral health and prevent tooth decay, sensitivity, and bone loss. The procedure typically involves removing tissue from the roof of the mouth or nearby healthy gums and attaching it to the area where the gums have worn away. The surgery is relatively quick; however, there is no guarantee that gum recession will not happen again in the future if the cause of the recession is not addressed prior to grafting.

Frenectomy

A frenectomy is a surgical procedure that involves the removal or modification of a frenum, which is a band of connective tissue and collagen that joins two areas in the mouth. There are several types of frena in the mouth, including the lingual frenum, which connects the tongue to the bottom of the mouth, and the superior and inferior labial frenum, which attaches the lips to the gums above the top two front teeth and below the bottom two front teeth, respectively. A frenectomy may be recommended to correct a frenum that is causing a lip-tie, tongue-tie, diastema (gap between front teeth), gum recession, pain, swelling, or tenderness when brushing. The procedure involves surgically modifying the frenum position to increase the range of motion of the tongue or lips, or completely removing the frenum to improve esthetic appearance or to help prevent recession.

Clinical (Functional) Crown Lengthening

Crown lengthening is a dental procedure that involves reshaping the bone and sometimes the gums around a tooth to expose more of the tooth’s surface. This procedure is commonly performed to prepare a tooth for a crown when there is not enough tooth structure left to adequately hold the crown in place.

Esthetic (Cosmetic) Crown Lengthening

Crown lengthening can also be done for esthetic purposes, such as to alter a “gummy smile” where the gums are visible above the teeth when smiling. Esthetic crown lengthening involves surgically contouring the bone and soft tissue around teeth so that the full natural crown of the tooth is exposed. This procedure is indicated when an individual appears to have short teeth.

Osseous Surgery

Osseous surgery is a surgical procedure performed to treat periodontal disease and reduce the depth of pockets that form between the teeth and gums. Deep pockets harbor bacteria and lead to further bone loss and damage if left untreated. During osseous surgery the gum tissue is moved away from the teeth, the bone is reshaped, teeth are thoroughly cleaned and the tissue is placed back into a lower position to heal. The procedure creates a healthier oral environment by reducing the depth of pockets around your teeth and allowing you to more effectively keep bacteria under control with normal brushing and flossing.
